Mark Yusishen’s Approach to HR: From Corporate Roles to Advisory Leadership

For Mark Yusishen, founder of Yusishen HR Advisory, that moment came after years of working in corporate HR and consulting with some of Canada’s leading organizations. Today, he applies everything he’s learned to help businesses create workplaces that balance strong performance with employee well-being.

Building a Foundation in HR

Mark’s career began with a strong academic background. After completing his Bachelor of Commerce in Human Resources Management at York University’s Schulich School of Business, he pursued a Master of Industrial Relations and Human Resources at the University of Toronto. His graduate research on employee well-being in remote work environments proved to be ahead of its time, offering insights that many organizations only began to fully appreciate during the global shift to hybrid work.

Mark further strengthened his credentials by earning the Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation through the HRPA and completing executive courses in Leadership and Change Management at McGill University. These milestones equipped him with both the theory and tools needed to navigate complex people challenges.

Early Corporate Roles

Mark entered the HR field at Manulife Financial in Toronto as an HR Associate (2010–2013). There, he gained practical experience in recruitment, employee benefits, and training — all of which gave him a strong foundation in understanding employee needs and organizational processes.

In 2013, he joined Bombardier Inc. in Montreal as an HR Business Partner. Supporting large-scale project teams, Mark dealt with the challenges of employee engagement and performance management in high-pressure environments. It was during this time that he began to see the critical connection between morale and productivity.

Expanding Perspective Through Consulting

In 2015, Mark made a significant transition to Deloitte Canada’s Human Capital practice, where he worked until 2020. As a consultant, he advised mid-sized and large organizations on talent acquisition, diversity and inclusion, and organizational restructuring. This role broadened his perspective, exposing him to industries ranging from technology to healthcare.

Mark recalls that consulting reinforced one key lesson: every organization is unique, but the core driver of success is the same — people. Leaders who invested in employee well-being and engagement consistently saw better outcomes in retention, innovation, and growth.

Founding Yusishen HR Advisory

By 2020, Mark decided it was time to take the leap and launch his own practice, Yusishen HR Advisory, based in Vancouver. His goal was to bring a more personalized, people-first approach to HR consulting, with a focus on startups and growing businesses.

Through his firm, Mark specializes in three main areas:

  1. Leadership Coaching – Helping executives and managers strengthen their leadership skills and build trust with their teams.

  2. Employee Wellness Program Design – Creating initiatives that support both mental and physical health in the workplace.

  3. Talent Retention Strategies – Guiding organizations to keep their best people engaged and committed.

A Holistic Approach to HR

What sets Mark apart is his holistic philosophy. He doesn’t see HR as a series of policies or compliance checklists, but as a way to build environments where employees and organizations succeed together. His approach blends data-driven strategies with a genuine commitment to people.

Mark’s personal passions also influence his professional work. A dedicated CrossFit athlete and advocate for healthy living, he draws on the principles of fitness — consistency, resilience, and balance — when advising leaders. He also enjoys cooking and community involvement, bringing the same sense of culture and connection into his HR philosophy.
